چکیده

A new method is proposed to measure the finite element (FE) displacement field from a deformed image in comparison to a reference one. In opposition to standard FE approaches, the unknown displacement is sought as a sum of products of separated dimensions functions. The problems in each dimension being uncoupled, the method involves only 1D meshes and 1D problems. An algorithm that builds successive best rank-one approximations is proposed and integrated into the nonlinear iterations of the correlation problem. Although the method can be applied to spaces of any dimension, this paper focuses on 2D images. Many synthetic examples are provided to evaluate the performance of the method. In addition, it is shown that, even with this separated representation, the introduction of a regularization operator is convenient. The latter makes it possible to perform a pixel-wise measure with huge computational savings.

Displacement monitoring of a Long-Span Arch Railway Bridge using Digital Image Correlation (DIC)

There is an escalating demand for condition monitoring enhancement of transport infrastructures worldwide. Bridges are of vital importance in transportation infrastructure and need such monitoring. In this research, a non-contact vision-based technique called Digital Image Correlation (DIC) was used to calculate the bridge displacements. A high frame rate camera with 4K capability was used for ...

A dual domain decomposition method for finite element digital image correlation

The computational burden associated to finite element based digital image correlation methods is mostly due to the inversion of finite element systems and to image interpolations. A non-overlapping dual domain decomposition method is here proposed to rationalize the computational cost of high resolution finite element digital image correlation measurements when dealing with large images. It con...

Nanoscale Deformation Analysis With High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy and Digital Image Correlation

We present an application of the digital image correlation (DIC) method to highresolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images for nanoscale deformation analysis. The combination of DIC and HRTEM offers both the ultrahigh spatial resolution and high displacement detection sensitivity that are not possible with other microscope-based DIC techniques. We demonstrate the accuracy and uti...

Impact of speckle pattern parameters on DIC strain resolution calculated from in-situ SEM experiments

The advent of small-scale testing procedures coupled with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) imaging allow for high-resolution digital image correlation (DIC) studies to examine strain localization at the grain size length scale. A systematic study was performed to determine how speckle patterning parameters (speckle density and shape) affect strain resolution of DIC using SEM imaging. Strain r...

Variation of mechanical properties in a multi-pass weld measured using digital image correlation

As part of a programme investigating the structural integrity of welds, the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique was used to obtain the full-field strain distribution during tensile testing of cross-weld specimens cut from a multi-pass girth welded pipe. The displacement maps were analyzed using Matlab scripts to compute local stress-strain variations from which the local proof stress valu...
